Dr Gachet, who lived at Auvers-sur-Oise, north of Paris, was an art lover, homeopathic doctor and friend of many Impressionists (including van Gogh, whom Dr Gachet tended in his last months). Gachet’s house in Auvers became a congenial meeting-place for the artists, their discussions being a source of new ideas. Cezanne was drawn into the group by his friend Camille Pissarro and found the free-and-easy atmosphere much to his liking. Among the many paintings he did at Auvers were several of the road through the town to Dr Gachet’s house. This one is among the finest of them. Its composition is centred on the tree growing by the Gachet house and is balanced by the converging diagonals of the road, which Cezanne has deliberately painted rising up the picture. |
